Where & when it all started…
Love for Africa
It started with Jan Herremans growing up in former Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of Congo. At a young age, Jan started working in his father’s transportation company. He fell in love with the African continent but in 1968, Jan and his father, Marcel, were obliged to return to Belgium. The region had become unsafe after the independence of Zaire.
First Bandag dealer in Europe
Back in Belgium, Marcel was one of the first Bandag dealers in Europe. Jan joined his father and started up a flourishing business. Together they opened more Bandag companies in Europe. The retreading industry was still in its infancy and would grow and develop strongly.
Trade in casings & used tyres
At the age of 23, Jan was ready to stand on his own two feet. He started trading in tyre casings. Later he expanded the scope of his activities and also traded in used tyres.
His love for Africa and his passion for travelling made him focus on export activities in Cameroon, Senegal and Nigeria. Gradually his scope broadened to America: the United States, Central and South America.
Now it is his daughter’s turn
Today the business is run by Jan’s eldest daughter, Isabelle. After obtaining a Master’s degree in Applied Economic Sciences and an MBA, she founded her own company (but not in used tyres). At the height of its success the company was handed over to her business partner and Isabelle went back to her roots. Combining the knowhow of the tyre trade with professional management, she’s now running this prosperous business with a small technical team.
